Start with how you drive, not with the badge

The most common mistake when buying a second-hand car is starting with the brand or whichever model is fashionable. The right question is: what are you going to use it for? On an island like Mallorca, that changes enormously depending on where you live and how much you drive.

If you mostly move around Palma on short trips, a small car that is nimble and easy to park will give you fewer headaches and lower running costs. If you live in the interior or in the Llevant area (Manacor, Felanitx, Artà, Cala Millor) and combine open roads with carrying people or equipment, an SUV, an estate or an MPV makes far more sense.

Petrol, diesel or hybrid in Mallorca?

Average journeys on the island are short, so for most drivers petrol — or better still a hybrid — is the most balanced choice: lower urban consumption, simple servicing and good resale value.

Diesel is only worth it if you cover a lot of miles a year (a long daily commute, for example). If you drive little and mostly in town, a modern diesel can develop particulate filter problems and will not pay off.

Do not look only at the purchase price. A slightly dearer car that has been inspected, carries a warranty and uses little fuel usually works out cheaper over two years than a bargain with no history that ends up in the workshop.
