Which van do you need for your line of work?

There's no good or bad van, only the one that fits your work. For delivery and last-mile work, agility rules: a short van gets into the old quarters of Manacor or Palma, parks easily and uses little fuel over many daily stops. If you carry bulky but light parcels, prioritise cubic metres over kilos.

For trades like plumbing, electrical work or air conditioning the criteria change: you need interior height to work standing or to fit shelving, a proper bulkhead, and side doors giving quick access to materials. Here a high roof matters more than a bigger engine.

For removals and furniture the volume rules: a long or extra-long van with a high roof and the flattest possible floor. And if you carry palletised goods, check two things before anything else: that a Euro pallet fits between the wheel arches, and that the real payload lets you carry it fully loaded without exceeding the gross weight.

Camper conversion is a case of its own, increasingly common in Mallorca. If that's your plan, look for a long van with a high roof, and bear in mind the conversion must be homologated and recorded in the vehicle's technical documents.

Vans by load capacity: short, medium, long and XL

Manufacturers classify vans by length (L1 short, L2 medium, L3 long, L4 or XL extra long) and roof height (H1 standard, H2 high, H3 super high). That combination, far more than the badge, is what determines the cubic metres you actually get.

As a rough guide: a small van like a Kangoo or Berlingo sits around 3-4 m³ and 600-800 kg of payload; a medium van like a Jumpy, Vivaro or Trafic is around 5-6.5 m³ and 1,000-1,200 kg; a large van like a Ducato, Transit or Boxer can exceed 10 m³ and 1,500 kg depending on version.

The two most commonly confused figures are payload and gross vehicle weight. Gross weight is the maximum authorised total (vehicle + load + occupants); payload is what you can actually carry. Driving over the gross weight means a certain fine and, in an accident, an insurance problem. That's why we publish both figures on every van in our stock, along with load volume and roof height.

VAT, financing and tax for the self-employed and businesses

This is the part that raises the most questions and that classified-ad portals handle worst. When you buy a commercial vehicle used for your business activity and receive an invoice with VAT itemised, that VAT is in principle deductible. Spanish rules presume 50 % business use for passenger cars, but raise that presumption to 100 % for mixed-use vehicles intended for carrying goods — the usual case for a van. The presumption can be rebutted either way, so the advice is always the same: confirm it with your tax adviser before buying.

That's why our van listings state explicitly whether VAT is deductible and what the base price is, instead of burying it in the ad text. An ambiguous price on a business vehicle wastes everyone's time.

On payment, you can buy outright or finance. For a self-employed buyer the practical difference is the accounting treatment and how you prefer to spread the outlay: financing preserves working capital, which usually matters more than a few interest points when the vehicle is the tool that generates your income. Do van prices include VAT?

Can I buy as a business or self-employed and deduct the VAT?

Yes, provided the vehicle is used for your business activity and the deal is documented with an invoice showing VAT separately. For commercial vehicles intended to carry goods, Spanish rules presume 100 % business use, against the usual 50 % for passenger cars, though that presumption can be rebutted. Each listing states whether VAT is deductible and what the net price is. Always confirm with your tax adviser before signing.

Do you sell vans to individuals or only businesses?

Both. We have commercial vehicles for businesses and the self-employed as well as for individuals who need space. We advise you based on your case and use.

How much payload do I actually need?

Work out the maximum weight you'll carry on a normal day and add occupants and fixed tools. Parcel delivery usually needs 600-800 kg; construction, plumbing or drinks distribution is better above 1,000 kg; palletised goods almost always need 1,200 kg or more. Remember the payload that matters is that of the fully equipped vehicle, not the brochure figure.

Do you have high-roof vans or vans suitable for camper conversion?

It depends on current stock, which is why we publish roof height and body length on every van listing so you can see at a glance whether it fits. For camper conversions the usual choice is a long van with a high roof. Bear in mind the conversion must be homologated and recorded in the technical documents; tell us your plan and we'll point you to the units in stock that suit it best.

Do you take my current van in part-exchange?

Yes. We value your current vehicle, commercial or passenger, and deduct it from the price of the new van. We also handle the transfer of ownership and the paperwork so you don't lose working days to admin.

What warranty do the used vans come with?

All our vehicles, commercial ones included, are delivered inspected in our own workshop and with the statutory warranty that applies to a professional sale. Before delivery we check engine, transmission, brakes, tyres and the work-specific parts: side and rear doors, locks, bulkhead and load-floor condition.

How many kilometres is too many on a used van?

On a well-maintained diesel van, mileage is less alarming than on a car: these engines are built to cover ground. Usage type and service history matter more than the odometer. A van with 180,000 motorway kilometres and a full service record is usually in better shape than one with 90,000 urban delivery kilometres and no history. Do you deliver vans outside Mallorca, to Menorca or Ibiza?

Yes. In Mallorca we deliver free of charge in Manacor and the surrounding area and coordinate delivery across the rest of the island. For Menorca and Ibiza we arrange the ferry transport and give you a fixed cost before you decide. We handle all the paperwork and the change of ownership.
