How to spot a problem used car

You do not need to be a mechanic to avoid the worst cars. There are signs anyone can check that give away a neglected vehicle or one with hidden surprises:

• A price well below market: it almost always hides something.
• Mileage suspiciously low for the year and for the wear on the steering wheel, pedals or seat.
• No service book and no invoices for inspections.
• Loose play, odd noises, smoke on start-up or warning lights on the dashboard.
• A seller in a hurry who will not let you inspect the car or dodges questions about its history.

Private seller or used car dealer

Buying from a private seller is usually a little cheaper, but you take on all the risk: no warranty, no prior inspection and nobody to claim from if the car fails a week later. Buying from a used car dealer costs a bit more, but the car arrives inspected, with a written warranty and with a professional who answers for it.

If you buy privately, consider taking the car to a trusted workshop for an inspection before you pay. If you buy from a professional with their own workshop, that inspection is already done and they also back you up after the sale.

Paperwork: do not let anything slip

Before closing the deal, check that the seller is the registered owner, that the car is free of finance and seizures, and that the roadworthiness test (ITV) is valid. At handover you should receive the registration document, the technical data sheet and proof that the latest road tax has been paid.
